Dr. Henry Samueli Looks in to the Memphis Grizzlies Situation

On Friday, the LA Times ran a story with quotes from Dr. Henry Samueli saying that he is interested in purchasing an NBA team . Samueli has looked at the Portland Trail Blazers situation very closely according to reliable sources. Today, Samueli deployed several of his officials to Memphis to meet with Memphis Grizzlies officials. The Grizzlies are not officially for sale, but its no secret in NBA circles that Memphis owner Michael Heisley has been looking to sell the team - for a minimum of $300M.Some perspective on the Grizzlies: The Grizzlies moved from Vancouver in 2001. The City/County agreed to allow the Grizzlies to leave Memphis after 13 seasons (3 in the Pyramid and 10 in the new arena) if the Grizzlies are unable to achieve certain attendance thresholds, if the market does not “cure” such attendance shortfalls within 60 days, if the Grizzlies sell the franchise to an unaffiliated third party, and if the Grizzlies pay liquidated damages in an amount starting at $107 million after the 10th NBA season in the new arena.Sounds like Samueli would have an easier time getting the Grizzlies from Memphis to Anaheim than getting the Blazers from Portland to Anaheim at this point. The question now is, has Samueli deployed his officials to Memphis because he is serious about buying the Grizzlies and moving them to the arena he owns in Anaheim - The Pond - OR is Samueli trying to use Memphis as leverage for his negotiations with Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen. Or, maybe Samueli has seen that the situation in Portland is very sticky because of a lease agreement that calls for the Blazers to stay in Portland until 2025 and he has realized getting out of that agreement could be more problematic than he first thought.A very interesting subplot for the Grizzlies move to Orange County, if it were to happen, would be the return of legendary Laker Jerry West, who left the Lakers for the Grizzlies. West would love to get back to Southern California and if he and Samueli could work out an agreement to keep West on as the President/GM of the Grizzlies, it could be quite a marketing coup for Samueli, because West is an icon in Southern California to this day. If West doesn't make the move for some reason, sources tell me that Sacramento Kings GM Geoff Petrie is Samueli's first choice to run his team. One thing is for sure.....Dr. Henry Samueli is doing his due dillegence and would like to have an NBA team playing in the Anaheim Pond as soon as possible.Stay tuned.
